Max Gladstone did some fun stuff with finance-as-magic and contract law in his Craft Sequence, but it's basically reframing global capitalism as the engine behind divinity and immortality.
Very interesting article. A small note: Holod in Ukrainian is "hunger". And Kholod is "cold" so the spelling "Kholodomor" makes it sound like people were dying of cold, rather than hunger. Sorry to quibble.
Thank you! You are right; I speak Ukrainian, so I can affirm the difference. However, in many Westerns sources Holodor is still spelled as Kholodomor, probably because the previous transliteration guides before ISO-9 suggested using KH to indicate х. Actually it should be spelled with G to be closer to Голодомор but I think most English speakers would not recognize it.
Cory Doctorow has all those post-scarcity near future books, but I don't think they're holding up all that great. Or maybe it's just me that's changed. 🙂

OK, Godatinengoes on my list for a follow-up. I did not address Vernon Vinge either or any of the Singularity peddlers. Sequels, here I come!

I imagine there was a good deal of холод as well as голод… Good luck!
